Is Palestine Safe for Travelers?

Essential Things to Know Before Visiting Palestine/West Bank
Before you visit Palestine and the West Bank, it is essential to be aware of a few things. First, the region is heavily militarized and there are many checkpoints and security guards in place. It is important to respect their authority and follow their instructions. To enter The West Bank you must go through the separation wall. We used checkpoint 300 near Jerusalem as this is the most commonly used checkpoint for tourists and travelers arriving by foot.
Checkpoint 300 was intimating with guards, cameras and many turnstiles. We walked through with little issues however it must be noted in peak season you can que for a while before being permitted entry. Also keep in mind that there are many people who commute across the checkpoint each day so avoid using the checkpoint at the times when people are going or returning to work otherwise you will be caught up in a sea of commuters.
It is important to be aware of local customs and laws. While the region is generally welcoming to visitors, it is important to respect the local culture and customs. This means dressing appropriately, being aware of cultural sensitivities, and being respectful of local customs.
Finally, it is important to be aware of the political situation in the region. You must be aware of the risks associated with traveling to a region that is in a state of conflict.
The most convenient way to travel into the West Bank is of course with an organised tour. If however you want to use your own transportation keep in mind you can’t drive a hire car into the area. We also found when trying to park near the check point people were trying to charge an over inflated price to park on waste land. We found it easier to park in the nearby shopping mall and get a taxi to the checkpoint.

Once you reach the other side of the checkpoint be prepared to be ambushed by literally up to 20 tour guides and taxi drivers. We ended up paying 50 US dollars for a taxi driver to take us to all the sites we wanted to see in the local area. Other guides are offering their services for up to 200 dollars but this would include going further afield to Jericho which we didn’t have time for. So it’s best to decide what it is you want to see before you arrive so not to be overwhelmed by the offers that will fly in.

Blessings Gift Shop and The Olive Wood Factory
located next to the Milk Grotto the Olive Wood Factory displays all sorts of beautifully hand crafted carvings from Olive Wood sourced form the area. In addition to being able to see the factory and the craftsmen at work there is also a narrow staircase that leads to the roof which offers 360 degree views of Bethlehem. This unique vantage point of Bethlehem and the surrounding hills was a really find and one that shouldn’t be missed!
The West Bank Banksy’s
The West Bank Banksy’s is a collection of artwork created by the anonymous street artist Banksy. The artwork is located in several cities throughout the West Bank, including Bethlehem and Hebron. The artwork is designed to bring attention to the region and to highlight the issues the people face. The artwork is thought-provoking and powerful. If you are planning to see them with your owns eyes it’s necessary to have transport as they are scattered in obscure places.
The Israeli West Bank Wall
The Israeli West Bank Wall is a controversial structure that separates the West Bank from Israel. It is a highly-guarded barrier and it has been a source of tension in the region, to some it serves as a protection and to others it feels like a cage. While it is not a fun thing to see, it is an important part of understanding the region.
A visit to the Walled Off Hotel is worthwhile and gives the visitor an insight into the feelings of people through the emotions instilled into the artwork that it houses. Allow 45 minuets to an hour to walk through the museum and stroll through the art collection.
